High-performance charged-couple device (CCD) cameras have opened up an exciting new window on the Universe for amateur astronomers. This book pres a complete, self-contained guide to choosing and using CCD cameras. Beginning with a no-nonsense introduction to CCD cameras, the authors explain what determines camera performance and demonstrate how to use a CCD camera and accurately calibrate the images obtained. The book also presents a clear review of the software available for visualizing, analyzing and processing digital images. Finally, the authors navigate a series of key areas in astronomy where astronomers can make the best use of CCD cameras.

This handy volume is packed with practical tips. It pres a clear introduction to CCD astronomy for novices and an indispensable reference for more experienced amateur astronomers.

Steve Massey, Steve Quirk, "Deep-Sky Video Astronomy (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)"

Springer | 2009 | ISBN: 0387876111 | 185 pages | PDF | 5,4 MB

Deep-Sky Video Astronomy is a concise guide to using modern video cameras for deep-sky viewing and imaging with the kinds of modest telescopes available commercially to amateur astronomers. It is not a beginner's book, but it does include an introduction and brief history of the technology, camera types, etc. More importantly, the authors examine the pros and cons of this unrefrigerated yet highly efficient technology, which is already beginning to compete with expensive astronomical cooled-chip CCD cameras in quality and ease of use.

The book also includes a thorough examination of the variety of accessories that are available and can be used to achieve a particular result. Examples of accessories are focal reducers, Barlow lenses, and optical filters. However, much of the book's focus is on the practical side of creating beautiful and detailed astronomical portraits using image-stacking software, picture enhancement tools such as Photoshop, and in creating color images using only a very sensitive black-and-white camera.

Practical step-by-step examples, supported by tried and trusted tips, show how it is possible to achieve the best possible celestial deep-sky video portrait!

There is also information on how this technology is being used for comet hunting, supernova patrols, lunar and Minor Planet occultations, astrometry, and meteoroid observations.

Making Beautiful Deep-Sky Images: Astrophotography with Affordable Equipment and Software
(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)

By Greg Parker
Paperback: 178 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (October 11, 2007)

This book is based around the author's beautiful and sometimes awe-inspiring color images and mosaics of deep-sky objects. The images were used as the basis of a public exhibition held at the University of Southampton (Summer 2006), attended by the press, local radio and TV interviewers as well as the public.

The book describes how similar images can be created by amateur astronomers, using commercially available telescopes and CCD cameras. Subsequent processing and image enhancement in the"electronic darkroom" is covered in detail as well. Not everybody can afford the biggest and best telescopes and CCD cameras, so a range of telescopes and equipment is considered, from the author's 11-inch with Hyperstar camera, down to more affordable instruments.

Appendices provide links to free software - not available from a single source - and are themselves an invaluable resource.

Eyrolles (5 octobre 2006) | ISBN: 2212114729 | 155 pages | PDF | 20 MB

Kosmos | 2003 | ISBN: 3440089819 | 192 pages | PDF | 14,9 MB

Sehr interessantes Buch

Scientific Detectors for Astronomy 2005 : Explorers of the Photon Odyssey (Astrophysics and Space Science Library)

By Jenna E. Beletic (Editor), James W. Beletic (Editor), Paola Amico (Editor)
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 771
Publication Date: 2006-04-11
Manufacturer: Springer
Studio: Springer

The 2005 meeting in Taormina, Italy was attended by 127 professionals who develop and use the highest quality detectors for wavelengths from x-ray to sub-mm, with emphasis on optical and infrared detectors. The meeting consisted of overview talks, technical presentations, poster sessions and roundtable discussions.

These proceedings capture the technical content and the spirit of the 2005 workshop. The 87 papers cover a wide range of detector technologies including CCDs, CMOS, APDs, and sub-mm detectors. There are papers on observatory status and plans, special applications, detector testing and characterization, and electronics. A special feature of these proceedings is the inclusion of pedagogical overview papers, which were written by teams of leading experts from different institutions.

These proceedings are appropriate for a range of expertise levels, from undergraduates to professionals working in the field. The information presented in this book will serve as a valuable reference for many years to come.

This workshop was organized by the Scientific Workshop Factory, Inc. and the INAF- Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania.
