Alles, was wir dazu brauchen, ist nebelfreies Wetter und die Bereitschaft, in der Hektik des Alltags einen Moment innezuhalten. Wer dann den Blick nach oben richtet und seine Sinne öffnet, wird belohnt durch zahlreiche Entdeckungen und Aha-Erlebnisse. Hoch über uns prangt das schimmernde Band der Milchstraße. Und selbst mit bloßem Auge lassen sich unter den unzähligen hellen und weniger hellen Sternen zwei diffuse Objekte ausmachen: Im Sternbild Andromeda sehen wir den Andromedanebel – es ist eine Galaxie, ähnlich groß wie unser eigenes Milchstraßensystem, deren Licht rund zwei Millionen Jahre unterwegs war, bevor es unser Auge trifft. Und im Sternbild Orion scheint einer der markanten Sterne von einem feinen Lichtschleier umgeben zu sein: Dieser Orionnebel besteht aus Gas- und Staubwolken, die von jungen Sternen zum Leuchten angeregt werden.

Die moderne Forschung beschäftigt sich intensiv mit den beiden doch so unterschiedlichen Nebeln. Aber auch aus historischer Sicht sind beide Objekte interessant. Der älteste Beleg für die Sichtung des Andromedanebels findet sich in einer Zeichnung, die der arabische Wissenschaftler Abd ar-Rahman as-Sufi um das Jahr 964 in seinem »Buch der Fixsterne« veröffentlichte. Doch vom Orionnebel fehlen Hinweise aus vorteleskopischer Zeit. Die ältesten Aufzeichnungen datieren von 1610, aus dem Jahr also, als die Astronomen gerade die ersten Teleskope zu nutzen begannen.

Diese Notizen liegen erst seit Kurzem in einer vollständigen Übersetzung aus dem Lateinischen vor. Ihr Studium wirft einige Fragen auf: Könnte es sein, dass der Orionnebel früher nicht so hell leuchtete wie heute, also mit bloßem Auge gar nicht gesehen werden konnte? Unser Autor Harald Siebert von der Technischen Universität Berlin hat die 400 Jahre alten Beobachtungsberichte ausgewertet. Seine Befunde werfen ein neues Licht auf den Orionnebel (S. 32).
